You can still have a presence on other sites although some methods of doing this have become less popular and need to be done carefully to avoid Google penalties. You could write content or Press Releases and interact with magazine or newspaper writers to bring traffic to your main site and then have a way for that traffic to complete a lead form on a lead generation form page. You could offer a co promotion or some other giveaway to bring people from a partner site and could be free with a simple sharing of advertising space or email newsletter mentions with a similar but different business.

You can find people that are not just interested in your topic but are actively looking to purchase goods and services. You can also use the particular search engine settings to avoid poorer quality traffic. If you see that visitors of a particular term are unlikely to convert to a lead you can exclude that traffic from even seeing your ad. A well researched keyword list showing ads on Google AdWords or Bing Ad Center will bring high converting leads to your sales funnel.

Less traffic than search advertising but even higher conversion rates can be seen with retargeting or remarketing to people that already have been to your site showing them an ad while they visit another site such as Facebook.
